Sara Hansdotter works with research and outreach at NORSØK (the Norwegian Centre for Organic Agriculture). With a background in agroecology, she is interested in questions related to systemic change in agriculture and food systems: What is needed to develop more sustainable and organic systems - both at farm level and throughout the entire value chain from soil to table?
Diversity in agriculture is crucial for food security, climate adaptation, and sustainable resource use. In the project “Diversity for Organic Food” this is explored through a key challenge: establishing an organic circular agriculture with local production of both plant and animal products is difficult. Today, these productions are often geographically separated. At the same time, there are good soil resources and plenty of organic fertiliser in regions with a lot of grassland and livestock, creating opportunities for increased local production of organic crops. Still, farmers face several barriers to farming more diversified. The project therefore investigates what is needed to increase diversity in crop production in regions currently dominated by grassland and fodder, and how farmers can learn from each other through networks across different farming systems.
